Vuyo Tshuma in Gent

Trefwoorden: calling up soweto, Sioen.

Dat Sioen iets heeft met Zuid-Afrika, dat kon u in het verleden op Gentblogt al vaak lezen. Maar hebben de Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikanten van Sioen ook iets met Gent? Jawel, zo bleek.

Het Calling up Soweto-project van Sioen tourt momenteel langs de Vlaamse Theaters, en doet op 19 januari de Vooruit aan. Voor deze tour zijn de Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikanten opnieuw in onze stad, en wij vroegen hen elk een stukje te schrijven over Gent, en wat hen van onze stad bijblijft. Ze schrijven niet in het Nederlands, maar wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat u dat gemakkelijk kunt vergeven. De tweede in deze reeks die het woord neemt is Vuyo Tshuma (°1975).

Vuyo zingt bij en staat in voor de arrangementen van Africapella. Zingen doet hij al van zijn drie jaar, arrangeur en koordirigent is hij sinds zijn vroege tienerjaren. In zijn werk verkent hij complexe harmonie, en hij laat zich niet vastpinnen op één soort of genre muziek. Ondanks zijn jonge leeftijd heeft hij samengewerkt met een resem grote (Zuid-Afrikaanse) namen als Themba Mkhize, Sibongile Khumalo, Lawrence Matshiza en Khaya Mahlangu.

Joburg vs. Gent? Now, looking at Johannesburg from a Gent point of view, I must say that Gent… hehe… is a wonderfully safe place.

Picture it. I can move about at any time of the day or night carring my cellphone in my hand while in Johannesburg, depending on where I am, I have to sometimes watch my back because as far as criminals are concerned, the cellphone is a great commodity to steal. I credit this to the fact that Johannesburg is a very fast paced country. It is not laid back at all. Everyone uses WHATEVER means necessary to eke out a living, including criminals who take chances.

Well, I have long adjusted to the fast pace but Gent gives me the relaxation, the slowdown. I needed that. The essentials of life. Wonderful.

Johannesburg has its high rise skyscrapers, imposing its Metropolitan aura on anyone who visits the city — something like Little New York.

Well. I have successfully integrated into the two city atmosphere, giving me, well, a very robust interesting life.

Vuyo Tshuma is dinsdag 19 januari samen met Sioen te zien op de theatertournee van Calling Up Soweto, in de Vooruit. Tickets kosten 22/18 euro. Alle info op de website.
